Painting Mini Gouache studies

When I want to go to more than one painting location and I'm going to be hiking I like to travel light. This comes in handy when the fall color is out and I have several favorite painting locations but I don't want to drag all my gear and heavy easel and canvases.
My go to gear is a small backpack with some gouache paints a few brushes and a small little miniature craft paper notebook. The notebook is only 2 1/2“ x 3 3/4“ I call these mini gouache studies.
These little studies allow me to do a quick sketch of a scene to include color notes and important information to be used later for a larger oil painting. The gouache dries quicker than watercolor I can do several of these in one location and then move onto the next location. When I get back to my studio I have a small little sketch of an on location painting. The little studies along with photos gives me enough information to complete a larger painting. I hope that you will give this a try one warning they can become addictive.
